Working with clay is timeless and universal. It is a fundamental part of being human; connecting us to each other and the natural world.

In my work I try to honour the rhythms that move and mould the soft clay; capturing the forms with live flames and respecting the chemistry that gives them texture and colour.

In the seclusion of our cosy cabin studio it’s easy to relax, be inspired and allow yourself to slow down and make mistakes. Be warned, it is addictive!

Charle Clarke & Dog

Vibrant, Sensual & Honest

I make, teach and write about pottery from a log cabin studio hidden in the wilds of Gloucestershire.

Clay is a sensual, grounding material that is beautiful to work with. It reflects the maker's mental and physical state with unflinching honesty. I believe this tangible expression of ‘humanness’ draws people to choose handcrafted over industrially made ceramics.

It is, therefore, important to me that the forms I offer stay vibrant, not overworked or overrefined. I want each piece to communicate a peaceful curiosity of mind, the deft lyricism of a practiced touch, and the rhythmic momentum of the wheel. This way, when you hold one of my mugs, bowls, or vases, you can more easily connect to the energy and mindfulness of its making process.

In addition to making ceramics, I have been teaching pottery for over a decade. Welcoming beginners to my popular ‘Clay Date’ experiences and mentoring regular students continue to be some of the most rewarding aspects of my work. I find it thrilling that the connections I make through teaching, demonstrating, learning, exhibiting and selling reach right across the world. This is testimony to how universal and fundamental our relationship with clay is. Inspired by this international community of ceramic artists, craftspeople, pottery historians and art therapists, I’m now launching a ‘Clay Date’ blog and Podcast platform and inviting you to join me on this exciting journey.

I’d love to share my wheel life adventures with you. Follow to find out more.
